| The Dominican Convent Motherhouse in Sparkill, a solid masonry structure built in the 1960’s, has long double-loaded corridors and small cell-like rooms, making it difficult for the older nuns to live comfortably and independently and to take part in the life of their community. CPLA designed a new 4-story wing which is adjacent to the refectory, the chapel and the infirmary. It now houses 33 sisters in small groups of rooms in spaces that are completely wheelchair accessible. One floor is designed for sisters with memory loss, and can be self-contained if necessary for the residents' comfort and safety. Each group of 6 to 10 rooms has a greenhouse space, a living room, a kitchenette for snacks, a computer corner, a laundry room, and several other service spaces and sitting areas. Construction was completed in 2006. Click to view photos: |
